SEABED MINING IN THE NT – OUR SUBMISSION

A significant milestone is approaching – on 5 March 2021 the NT Government will decide on whether to extend or lift the Moratorium on seabed mining, or to ban it permanently in the Top End.  Seabed mining, if allowed, would devastate the Top End’s unique coasts and seas, culture, livelihoods and fishing lifestyle.

The NT Government’s decision on the Moratorium will indicate its level of commitment to protecting the Top End’s natural, cultural, recreational and economic coastal values.  Proper protection for the Top End’s coasts and seas from this destructive industry can only be achieved by a permanent ban on seabed mining in the Northern Territory.

The NT Environmental Protection Authority (NTEPA) invited comments and advice on the draft review on the environmental impacts and management of seabed mining in the Northern Territory.
