Past Events

From September to April each year up to 37 species of migratory shorebirds visit the Top End. They are extreme marathon migrants! Annually, they fly a 22,000 kilometre round-trip from their breeding grounds in the Arctic to the Top End and back again.

Join us for a short walk to watch these shorebirds feeding before their imminent departure. Learn about great knots, greater sand plovers, far eastern curlews and much more from PhD student Amanda Lilleyman, who studies shorebirds of Darwin Harbour.

Like birds of a feather, let’s flock together for our last chance of the season!

Notes:

• Please bring hat, sunscreen, water and binoculars if you have them (some will be available for use).
• The walk is less than 1 km.
• Morning tea will be provided.
• We will meet in the carpark at the boat ramp.

In the Top End we have a lot to celebrate on World Turtle Day! Six of the world’s seven sea turtle species can be found nesting or foraging along our coast. Come along to our annual turtle celebration.

• Learn which nesting tracks belong to which species of turtle.

This world environment day let’s end the mangrove madness.

A worrying development at Bayview is set to clear up to 25.5 hectares of mangroves in Darwin Harbour. Our Top End mangroves are suffering a death by a thousand cuts. We must stop this mangrove madness!

Join us and local mangrove ecologists from EcoScience to celebrate these incredible ecosystems at a free mangrove tour in Ludmilla Bay. Learn why these coastal forests are important to our lifestyle, livelihoods and marine life and what you can do to protect them.

We look forward to introducing you to this diverse but threatened ecosystem.

This world environment day celebrate our oceans at a FREE film screening.

In Darwin, we can’t always put our heads in the water and see what’s below. Here’s a chance for you to explore the depths of our ocean at a FREE film screening of Disney’s "Oceans."

Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud dive into the very waters that sustain all of mankind, exploring the amazing creatures that live within. Experience the stories that connect their world to ours, in this family-friendly nature documentary.

BYO chair or mat. Bring a picnic. Come with family or friends and enjoy!

The Northern Territory waters are some of the last healthy tropical waters in the world. Supported by mangrove forests, extensive seagrass beds and coral reefs, the Top End coasts are home to six of the world’s seven sea turtles, the recently-identified snubfin dolphin, the vulnerable dugong and iconic sawfish.

To celebrate our tropical seas this World Oceans Day join us for a fun night of ocean-themed trivia.

• How many sea turtle species found in the NT can you name?

• How many songs do you know with the word “sea”?

• How well do you know your undersea movie / cartoon characters?

$10 per team, up to 6 people per team.
Bring your friends for a whale of a time!

Territory Day, or cracker night, is a highlight on the Top End calendar. Territorians and visitors gather on Mindil Beach to watch fireworks illuminate the Timor Sea.

Last year the Darwin Aquaculture Centre collected 2 full bags of cracker pollution the morning after. This pollution would have ended up in the ocean and some would be consumed by our marine life, including sea turtles. It is estimated that half of all sea turtles have consumed plastic pollution.

This year we are gathering the troops for a post-cracker night beach clean!

Bring hats, sunscreen and water. Gloves and bags will be provided. Please join us to keep our Top End coasts (and turtles) healthy after the big celebration.

PS. If you are going to go crackers on Cracker Night, please be responsible and pick up your rubbish.

We'll be at the Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival again this year, running a community stall to let people know more about the threats facing Top End coasts and how they can get involved.

To make this a success, we need your help.

We already have some volunteers signed up and ready to go, but we still have shifts to fill.
