The coast is the heart of our Top End lifestyle. But bulldozing the seafloor would decimate our marine life, pollute our seas, threaten our fishing and destroy sites of cultural significance.
We know that there are many locations across the Territory coast where seabed mining has already been approved or where applications to mine exist. These include Anson Bay at the mouth of the Daly River, Limmen Bight, and the seas surrounding Galiwinku and much of the Wessel Islands.
I urge you to permanently ban seabed mining from Territory seas – to protect our coasts and our treasured Top End lifestyle. The Gunner Government's soon to be released 10 year plan to safeguard our coasts - the NT Coastal and Marine Management Strategy - needs to deploy proven measures which provide long term protection of Top End coasts in the face of seabed mining and many other threats.
