Dear Ms Boothby, Minister for Tourism and Parks,
As one of your constituents in the electorate of Brennan, I’m writing to urge you to deliver on the CLP Government commitments to protect our Top End coasts.Â
The Territory has a proud history of marine protection and supporting tourism jobs. From the creation of the Garig Gunak Barlu (Cobourg) Marine Park under CLP Chief Minister Paul Everingham, to the CLP's Mike Reed acting to protect rivers and wildlife from gillnets, we’ve shown that smart coastal protection strengthens our lifestyle, supports tourism, and delivers for local communities.
Today, healthy Top End coasts underpin thousands of jobs and contributes $2 billion annually to the NT economy. These coasts are not only our favourite places to fish and relax, they are a great tourism drawcard. Yet many visitors bypass the NT in favour of places like Ningaloo Marine Park or the Great Kimberley Marine Park. We can change that and boost the NT tourism economy, while protecting our natural places and lifestyle.
It's fantastic to see work on the CLP's commitment to expand Limmen Bight Marine Park is well underway. Now, the Territory’s funding partnership with the Federal Government is a major opportunity to develop the Territory's next iconic marine park. These parks, like National Parks on land, can help put the NT on the map for high-quality, nature-based and fishing tourism.
Protected coastal areas also deliver practical benefits like biosecurity protection and eyes on the water from Indigenous Ranger groups; they can assist in our first line of defense.
As someone who lives in Palmerston in your electorate, I’m asking you to deliver on the commitments to protect our Top End coasts.
These are the kinds of actions that reflect the values of our community and protect the places we all love. Let's promote our marine parks as must-visit destinations for fishing, nature and culture, for locals and visitors alike.Â
Thank you for taking the time to considering my letter.
Yours sincerely,
(Your name and suburb will be added here)
